Prefixes: Ambi-

You've probably heard of someone being ambidextrous. This means that this person can perform tasks equally well with the left or right hand.

The prefix ambi- means both or around. Some words which begin with the prefix ambi- include:


	ambiance		ambivalent		ambiguous

	ambiguity		ambition		ambient

	ambidextrous

Here are the meanings of some of these words beginning with the ambi- prefix:


	ambidextrous - equal dexterity with left or right hands

	ambivalent - to see things two ways

	ambiguous - having more than one interpretation

	ambiance - surroundings

	ambient - surrounding on all sides

	ambition - desire to achieve

Related to words beginning with the prefix ambi- are words beginning with the prefix amphi- (such as amphibian). Both prefixes mean both or around. For instance, amphibians have the traits of both fish and land animals at different times of their lives.
