Verb Agreement

Take a look at the subject and verb in these two sentences:

He runs in a race every weekend.
They run in a race every weekend.

Notice that when we talk about just one person we use the verb "runs", but when we talk about more than one person we use the verb "run".

Here are some more similar examples:

She eats a lot on holidays.
They eat a lot on holidays.

He studies for three hours every day.
They study for three hours every day.

She works in the yard to earn her allowance.
They work in the yard to earn their allowance.

But notice what happens when we use the subject "I":

I eat a lot on holidays.

I study for three hours every day.

I work in the yard to earn my allowance.

Although "I" is a singular subject (as are "He" and "She"), it gets treated like a pluaral subject (such as "They").

Here is a practice problem for you to answer:

	Pick the correct verb:

They (eat/eats) dinner late at night.

	ANSWER: eat
