Double Letters

We've already established that there are a lot of words with double letters in this unit. Here they are again, in case you've forgot about them:


	shallow			shell			skillet

	shuttle			shatter			setting

	trapper			topping			slipper

Whether you double a letter or not can often make the difference between one word and another. Here are some examples:


	supper - a meal often eaten at the end of the day
	super - over and above, higher than, or greater than

	dessert - a sweet treat eaten after a meal
	desert - an arid area

	droop - to hang downward
	drop - to lower or cause to descend

	beet - a vegetable
	bet - something paid depending on the outcome of a contest

	loose - the opposite of tight
	lose - to fail to win a contest

	comma - a punctuation mark
	coma - to lose consciousness for a long time

	furry - anger
	fury - hairy

	choose - present tense synonym for select
	chose - past tense synonym for select

	latter - the second of two things referred to
	later - more late than something else

	lorry - a type of truck sometimes running on rails
	lory - a type of parrot
