Abbreviations and Acronyms

Here are some common abbreviations:

Here are some common acronyms:

	PIN: Personal Identification Number

	SCUBA:  Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus

	AIDS: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

	NASA: National Aeronatics and Space Administration	

	AWOL: Absent WithOut Leave

	SWAT: Special Weapons Action Team

	SNAFU: situation normal, all fouled up

The difference between abbreviations and acronyms is that you say abbreviations as separate letters (as in p-s-i) and you say acroyms as if they were regular words (as in SCUBA).


Categories and Classification

Classifying means sorting things into groups (or categories). The category is like a label or name for a group of items which are alike in some way. The following example shows several items sorted into different categories.
