	mash trash flash

	gash flask

The ash and ask letter patterns can occur anywhere in a word.

Another letter pattern which occurs a few times in this unit is the tra- letter pattern.

	trash trail trapper

Although in this unit the tra letter pattern is seen only at the front of words, it can also occur at the end of a word as in "extra".

Irregular Pluralization

Nouns come in a singular form (when you are talking about one of something) and a plural form (when you are talking about more than one of something). Most nouns can be pluralized by adding an "s" to the end of the noun in one way or another. Some nouns are pluralized without adding an "s" to the end of the noun. These nouns are considered irregular in the way they are pluralized.

Here are the normal rules for pluralization:

       1. DROP THE Y AND ADD -IES
Use on words which end with Y like: city/cities, fly/flies
But not on words like: boy/boys, bay/bays

        2. ADD -ES
Use on words which end with ss, ch, x, or sh: peach/peaches

        3. JUST ADD -S
Use on most words like: dog/dogs, cat/cats, chair/chairs

Here are some nouns which do not follow the regular rules:

		SINGULAR PLURAL

		 goose geese
		 mouse mice
		 foot feet
		 louse lice
		 tooth teeth
		 man men
		 sheep sheep
		 deer deer
