Clipped Words

Clipped words are words which have been shortened such as: 


	FULL WORD			CLIPPED WORD
	  refrigerator			  fridge
	  market			  mart
	  limousine			  limo
	  chrysanthemum			  mum
Clipped words aren't usually considered proper words to use in school reports or business correspondence, but they can be used in fiction and in personal correspondence. 

	FULL WORD			CLIPPED WORD
	  modern			  mod
	  gasoline			  gas
	  taxicab			  taxi
	  teenage			  teen
	  memorandum			  memo
	  television			  TV
	  sister			  sis
Some clipped words are so widely used that they are considered proper words. For instance, lunch is a clipped form of luncheon, but it doesn't sound right to use the word luncheon anymore since lunch is the more commonly used term.

Analogies

Analogies can be fun word puzzles in which you try to figure out the missing word as in these examples: 


  Small is to town as big is to _______.
  Cereal is to breakfast as sandwich is to _______.
  Morning is to sunrise as evening is to ________.
