Subjects and Predicates

All sentences contain a subject and a predicate. You might think of the subject as who or what the sentence is about and the predicate as what the subject does. Here are some simple examples with the subject underlined and the predicate in red:


	Phil pretended to be asleep.

	The giant oak tree fell on Sam's car.

Both subjects and predicates can be compound. Here's a sentence with both a compound subject and a compound predicate.

	Phil and Sam ate breakfast and then drove to Elko.
