Subjects and Predicates
All sentences contain a subject and a predicate. You might think of the
subject as who or what the sentence is about and the predicate as what the
subject does. Here are some simple examples with the subject underlined and
the predicate in red:
Jill ran to the store.
Sam's dog ate all the beef jerky.
The giant oak tree fell on Sam's car.
All sentences have both a subject and a predicate. The subject tells who or
what does something in the sentence. The predicate tells what the subject
does or is. Here are some more examples:
Jack fell down the hill.
Phil pretended to be asleep.
The can was still full.
