Letter Patterns

This unit contains several words with the -ing letter pattern. Most often you find this pattern at the end of words. Here are the words from this list which contain the -ing letter pattern.

	bringing sitting writing

	running biting stinging

	biking hiking

Three words from the list all end with -on:

	neutron proton electron

All these words name parts of an atom.

Irregular Plurals

Recall that there are three basic rules for pluralizing nouns:

        1. DROP THE Y AND ADD -IES
Use on words which end with Y like: city/cities, fly/flies
But not on words like: boy/boys, bay/bays

        2. ADD -ES
Use on words which end with ss, ch, x, or sh: peach/peaches

        3. JUST ADD -S
Use on most words like: dog/dogs, cat/cats, chair/chairs

HOWEVER, some nouns just don't like to follow the rules. These words are irregular in the way they get pluralized. Here are a few examples:

	SINGULAR NOUN PLURAL NOUN
	  mouse mice
	  goose geese
	  foot feet
	  tooth teeth
	  louse lice
	  deer deer
	  sheep sheep
	  man men
