Suffix: -y and -ly
The suffix -ly most often means "in the manner of." Here are some examples.
slow + ly slowly
quick + ly quickly
slick + ly slickly
generous + ly qenerously
brave + ly bravely
moist + ly moistly
Notice that -ly is usually added to an adjective and that the resulting word
is an adverb. So, adding -ly to most adjectives will transform it into an
adverb. Here are a few examples:
The soldier bravely fought in the battle.
She generously donated money to help find a cure for cancer.
The mouse quickly scampered down the hall.
