Adverbs

An adverb can modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It can be used to tell how, when, where, why, or how much. Here are a few example sentences in which the adverb is underlined.

  The children screamed loudly.

She quickly walked down the hall.

He did not go on the trip.

The word "not" is almost always an adverb.

Adverbs can be created from adjectives by adding -ly. For instance, the adjective quick can be turned into the adverb quickly by adding -ly.

  METRIC: liters.

LENGTH:
  ENGLISH: inches, feet, yards, miles.
  METRIC: millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers.

TEMPERATURE:
Both ENGLISH and METRIC systems use the word degrees, but the
