Nouns and Verbs
There are words which can be used as nouns or verbs. You can tell which
function they fulfill by the context in which they are used. Consider these
two sentences:
1) Jack shot at the target.
2) Jack's shot was on target.
In the first sentence the word "shot" is a verb because it is the action
performed by Jack. In the second sentence the word "shot", is a noun because
it is something possessed by Jack (therefore it is a thing). Remember that
nouns name persons, places, or things. Verbs name actions.
Here is another similar example:
1) Jill's wait lasted four hours.
2) Jill had to wait four hours.
In the first sentence the "wait" is a thing which lasted four hours. In the
second sentence "wait" with the help of some helping verbs in an action
which Jill performed (and it still took four hours).
Here's an additional example:
1) It will snow all day.
2) Did you have a chance to play in the snow?
In the first sentence "snow" is a verb and in the second it is a noun.
