Pronouns

Many times a sentence contains more than one pronoun. Consider these examples:

James washed the dog and then he played with it.

Mary built a rock path so she could walk on it.

Suzy started a fire and then she put it out.

In each sentence there are two different pronouns which refer to two different nouns. In the first sentence he refers to James and it refers to dog. In the second sentence she refers to Mary and it refers to rock path. In the last senctence she refers to Suzy and it refers to fire. We automatically match the pronouns to the nouns to which they refer.

Many times the pronoun and the noun to which it refers are not in the same sentence. Consider this example.

Amy had a good time at the party. It was held at
her friend's house. Amy especially enjoyed the music
at the party. She heard all of her favorite songs.

It's not difficult to keep track of the pronouns and the nouns to which they refer. Even in much longer stories we have no difficulty keeping track of the references between pronouns and nouns.

Here are a couple more examples:

The party was held yesterday afternoon. It was a lot of fun.

The dog was a mess. It fleas and it stank really bad.

My house is painted green. It is easy to recognize.
