The -ed Suffix

RULE ONE: Just add -ed. Example: nail + ed = nailed.

This rule applies to most verbs. But there are exceptions
which follow the rules shown below.

RULE TWO: Just add d. Example: use + ed = used.

Many verbs which end with an e can be dealt with in this
way. But, again, there are exceptions.

RULE THREE: Double the last letter and add -ed. Example: drop + ed = dropped.

Verbs that end with a single consonant which
follow a single vowel follow this pattern.
Examples: slap + ed = slapped, pat + ed = patted,
shred + ed = shredded, drag + ed = dragged,

RULE FOUR: Drop the y and add -ied. Example: try + ed = tried

Verbs that end with y (when the y does not have a single
vowel in front of it) follow this pattern.

RULE BREAKERS: There are some irregular verbs that don't follow the add -ed rule.

	EXAMPLES: ride/rode, read/read, run/ran, dig/dug, drink/drank.
