Root Words
A good example of a word containing an interesting root word is:
You probably recognize the word color in the middle of this word. We only
talked about prefixes (like the dis- at the front of discoloration) in this
unit, but you will notice that this word also has a suffix added to the end.
For your information, a discoloration is more or less, in many cases, the same
thing as a stain, although it could be other things too.
Contractions
Recall some of the contraction examples from earlier in this unit.
will not --> won't
let us --> let's
do not --> don't
can not --> can't
Most contractions are formed by combining a word like do with not and
replacing the o in not with an apostrophe. But as you can see from the list,
there are exceptions.
