Root Words

To get an idea of the difference between prefixes, root words, and suffixes, take a look at this table.

Here are some quick definitions that you should know:


	AFFIX - word part with specific meaning added to a word

	PREFIX - an affix added to the beginning of a word

	SUFFIX - an affix added to the end of a word

	POSTFIX - another word for suffix

Take a look at the following list of words:


	mismatch		decode		recheck

	rematch			derail		distrust

Each of these words have prefixes (an affix at the front of the word).

If you get rid of the prefix, you have the root word. Here are the words from above stripped of their affixes:


	match			code		check

	match			rail		trust

Now take a look at this list of words:


	called			meaning		gently

	breakable		smallest	taller

Each of these words have suffixes (an affix at the end of the word).

If you get rid of the suffix, you have the root word. Here are the words from above stripped of their affixes:


	call			mean		gentle

	break			small		tall

Sometimes root words are called base words. Either term means the same thing.
