Clipped Words

Many words are commonly shortened. Here are some examples: 


	FULL WORD			CLIPPED WORD
	  advertisement			  ad
	  automobile			  auto
	  bicycle			  bike
	  cucumber			  cuke
	  influenza			  flu
	  mathematics			  math
	  airplane			  plane
	  typographical error		  typo
Words which are shortened, like these examples, are sometimes called clipped words. It is a good idea to know that the shortened versions of these words aren't actually proper words and that the full word should be used when writing reports and business correspondence. Of course, the shortened versions are fine for personal letters and notes.

Here are a few more shortened words:

	  chrysanthemum			  mum
There are lots of commonly used clipped words. Here are some more:

	  sister			  sis
In some cases the clipped version of the word is used more than the full version of the word. Here are a few more examples:
