Verbs

A verb is an action word. It names something someone or something does. Here are some common and easily recognized verbs:

	throw sit jump

	walk run roll

	build break crack

	said read sat

Here are some of these verbs used in sentences:

	He cracked the egg.

The egg rolled on the table.

Jill walks in the woods on Sundays.

	The beavers built a dam.

A verb names an action. Actions are things that people, places, or things do.

PEOPLE: Jill ran down the road.

PLACES: Idaho grows a lot of potatoes.

THINGS: The rock rolled down the mountain.

Actions sometimes don't seem to be physically active. Take these verbs for example:

	rest	stare	freeze	stand	stop

For example:

They stop at the stop sign.

The cars wait at the intersection.

Joe's friends watch the movie with him.
