Conjunctions

The three most commonly used conjunctions are:


	and		or		but


Conjunctions are used to join phrases or words. Here are three more commonly used conjunctions:
                                                                                
        if		because		as soon as
                                                                                
The following sample sentences contain conjuctions (underlined).

  Jill has a cold and she doesn't feel like going out.

  Jack is going to go to the movies if he can get some money.

  Jane and Jasper are going to go for a walk or play in the park.

  Jed wants to go to a restaurant because he is hungry.

  Jeff wants to go, but he doesn't have any money.


As mentioned before, conjunctions are words which connect words and phrases. Conjunctions are used a lot and you should be aware of them. The most common conjunctions are:


	and		or		but             while

        if		because		as soon as      before
                                                                                
        until           since           unless          although
        
The word "that" is sometimes also used as a conjunction, although it also has other functions it may perform depending on how it is used.

Here are some more sentences containing conjuctions (underlined).


  Mark will wash the dishes if you will clear the table.

  Kelly or Tammy cleaned the kitchen this morning.

  Beth dried the dishes and she swept the floor.

  Jimmy can play as soon as he finishes his chores.

  Everyone knew that it was time for lunch.

Here's a mnemonic device which might help you think of a few conjunctions:
F = for
A = and
N = nor
B = but
O = or
Y = yet
S = so
