Language Arts - Parts of Speech - Adverbs

Adverbs

An adverb can modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It can be used to tell how, when, where, why, or how much. Here are a few example sentences in which the adverb is underlined.

1) The children screamed loudly.

2) She quickly walked down the hall.

3) He did not go on the trip.

In sentence one "loudly" tells how the children screamed. The word "quickly" in sentence two tells how the person walked. The word "not" is always an adverb. In sentence three the word "not" modifies the verb go.

Adverbs can be created from adjectives by adding -ly. Here are some examples.

	ADJECTIVE ADVERB
	 rapid rapidly
	 sudden suddenly
	 quick quickly
	 forceful forcefully
	 sweet sweetly
	 gentle gently

Not all adverbs end in -ly. Here are some examples: very, far, too, and always.
