Codes
One of the most famous codes is the Morse code. The Morse code is a system
of dots and dashes that can be used to send messages. Most people are
familiar with the SOS distress signal which is made up of three dots, three
dashes, and three dots.
Here's the Morse code:

A telegraph is used to tap out the dots and the dashes. The dots correspond
to short taps and the dashes correspond to long taps. The telegraph operator
pauses slightly between letters. This way a D (-..) doesn't get confused
with an N (_.) followed by an E (.).
Here are a few common words represented in morse code:
oxygen | ---   -..-   -.--
--.   . -. |
silver | ... .. .-..
...- . .-. |
oxide | --- -..- ..

period | .--. . .-.
