Language Arts - Cross-Curricular - Adjectives and AdverbsAdjectives Adjectives modify nouns. That means that adjectives help to describe nouns. They provide us with more information about a noun. For instance, consider how the following adjectives might give us more information about a tree. Jill took a picture of the ______ tree. old dead tall healthy decaying small beautiful stately burnt Descriptive adjectives can come in three forms: regular, comparative, superlative. Here are some examples: REGULAR COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE tall taller tallest cold colder coldest healthy healthier healthiest smooth smoother smoothest wet wetter wettest Jack's dog was dirtier than Collin's dog. Jack's dog was the dirtiest dog in town. Adverbs Adverbs modify verbs. That means that adverbs help to describe verbs. They provide us with more information about how something was done. For instance, consider how the following adverbs might give us more information about someone walking down the road. Jill was _______ walking down the road. slowly rapidly carefully quietly clumsily independently timidly bravely powerfully Each of these adverbs provides us with a different picture of how Jill is walking (and what kind of road she is walking on). For instance, if she is carefully walking down the road, we might picture the road as being full of pot holes or other obstacles. Often we can create adverbs from adjectives: ADJECTIVE ADVERB quiet quietly brave bravely timid timidly slow slowly quick quickly stubborn stubbornly | |
