Number Line Addition
Addition problems can be illustrated using a number line as shown below. In
this first example the problem "5 + 3" is shown:
The first number in the problem is the starting point and the second number
is the number of hops to right on the number line we must go to reach the
answer to the addition problem.
Here's another example.
NOTE:
Explain that the arrow in each illustration represents the first number of
the problem and that the arcs (or hops) represent the second number. Draw a
few examples like this, but allow the student to draw in the arcs.
Obviously, some students will be tempted to just key in the number under the end of the
last hop. Encourage the student to think about each problem and not to
simply copy the answer.
