Subtraction Dot Problems:

Drawing a picture to illustrate a subtraction problem is a good way to make it easier to understand the problem. If you understand the problem, you are more likely to be able to solve it correctly.


  

  There are seven dots in all. Two are yellow. How many are not yellow?


ANSWER: 5.
Here's another subtraction problem illustrated with dots:

  
  There are nine dots in all. Five are yellow. How many are not yellow?


ANSWER: 4.


NOTE: Explain that for each group of dots there is a total number of dots and that the number of magenta dots can be found by subtracting the yellow dots from the total number of dots.
