Arithmetic - Number Sense - Counting Backwards

Counting Backwards:

The ability to count in reverse, or backwards, can be useful at times. In any case, students are expected to master this skill.


  The Counting Numbers Backwards (from 10):

    10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

Whether the numbers are presented in reverse order or regular order, students should be able to identify missing values.

  Which number is missing?

    10, 9, __, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

  ANSWER: 8

NOTE: Practice counting backwards with the student. The student will be expected to identify the missing number in the following activity. Some students might start at the right end of the sequence and count until they reach the missing number. Allow the student to do this, but model counting down from the left side of the sequence.
